I think that to make for a good portrait, it should be someone what candid. Not candid as in like the person has no idea you're taking a portrait of them, but candid as in that the person is in their "natural habitat" or being themselves. Because a portrait is meant to picture who you are and not someone you aren't. They should also be done in the appropriate setting for the portrait. I don't think that the portrait isn't good because it is just a close up of the woman's face. It doesn't really show who they are.
